CiviCRM Permissions
June 18, 2014, 12:10:12 am
Not sure if this query is best here or in the documentation board...

In responding to a query from a client about access permissions to various CiviCRM functionality I was looking for a detailed explanation of all the basic permissions options (i.e. not involving the use of CiviCRM's ACLs), but couldn't find one. The documentation does look to be little light on this currently, unless I'm missing something.

Is anyone aware of a good detailed explanation of all the permissions options. Some are fairly obvious, but others are really quite unclear and IMHO could benefit from better labelling and explanation.

If I can better understand what all the permissions options provide I'll be happy to assist in improving documentation on this issue.

Have you looked at http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC44/Default+Permissions+and+Roles.  This is the most comprehensive list of permissions available at the moment.

Improving the permission documentation is on the to do list for 4.5, but I must admit I haven't made much progress yet. If you have time to contribute that would be great.

Thanks Joanne
I had read this page on the wiki, but it doesn't include all of the permissions I see listed on my installs, nor does it (for me at least) provide enough information to make it clear what all the listed permissions provide.
Specifically I was interested in the details of the following permissions that I see on my installs:
  • profile create
  • profile edit
  • profile listings
  • profile listings and forms
  • profile view
but the wiki page only mentions one of these.

Happy to help improve the docs on this, as I see it as a really important issue for security.

You may find what you want to know at http://book.civicrm.org/user/current/initial-set-up/permissions-and-access-control/ towards the bottom of the page.

Thanks, that's helpful. I did check this page before, but must have missed the content at the bottom which sets out pretty much what I need.
I remain happy to assist with improving documentation, just let me know.

Re: CiviCRM Permissions

I just loaded CiviCRM to our Joomla site.  I am trying to add CiviCRM users with the proper ACLs so they have the minimum rights to do their job functions on the site.

I have looked through and tried creating the groups to add users assignments and it is just not working for me.

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC44/Assign+Users+to+Roles

The users have registered Joomla accounts but I see no where in the CiviCRM extension where I find there Joomla User accounts to grant them the rights.

I was wondering if there was a "step by step guide" on how to do this config set up.  I have tried looking for youtube videos on the topic as well with no success.  Youtube videos on CiviCRM only discuss the features and benefits, but no technique know how.

If anyone can point me in the one direction this would be great.

I think you will find what you want in http://book.civicrm.org/user/current/initial-set-up/permissions-and-access-control/  in particular look for Finding ACLs in Joomla!

I am trying to add users to CiviCRM that can administer the CiviCRM app on Joomla Site. I am having difficulty getting the add the people.  The group I created on CiviCRM is shaded where you can not select it.

Also the people that are registered in Joomla do not show up in CiviCRM even though there is a Joomla Extension that is supposed to connect them and show Joomla accounts in CiviCRM.

I was thinking it was an ACL issue but it seems that are many different way to configure.  I just want to get it where I can have users login into the site online and input date into CiviCRM.

Does any one have any solutions?

Only people with CiviCRM records (and the appropriate permissions) can be CiviCRM admin users, so you need to work out how to get linked civicrm records for the people with Joomla accounts before you try to sort out permissions.

In CiviCRM have you gone to Administer > Users and Permissions > Synchronize Users to Contacts?  If this doesn't work what version of Joomla are you using?
