CiviMember Renewal Process hangs

We have inherited a membership process that was developed in CiviCRM 3.3.5.  Members who renew online do not seem to have any problems, their end date is updated, they receive an email letting them know that their membership has been updated, and their financial information is correctly registered. However, when we try to renew a membership manually, the end date is changed, no email sent, no financial info registered, and the process hangs.  Any ideas?
