Think this was after upgrade to 4.4.5 (but not sure)
Have checked resource URLs and base dir/url

images won't even appear via direct url so is this a permission thing? (all are 775 & 644)
don't think I changed any .htaccess

many hours of hair tearing *sigh*

Yes, if images don't appear via direct URL then they certainly won't appear on the site. :)

What CMS do you use? What do you see when you put an image URL in the browser?

There is a bug related to contact images in 4.4.5.

Using Drupal 7

When I put url in browser I get

"Not Found

The requested URL "/sites/default/files/tri_logo_sk_website.png" was not found on this server."

Hmm.. so base url is missing? I can see it's correct in "Settings - Cleanup Caches and Update Paths" screen. And ok in civicrm.settings.php

Thanks Joanne but it's not just contact images

Looks like this is not a CiviCRM issue actually.

Is the file sites/default/files/tri_logo_sk_website.png on the server?
