Bounce type "syntax"
June 27, 2014, 09:30:01 am
I have two mailings (238 emails and 402 emails) that I am just not able to get going and sent. The job says "complete" but when looking at the report, every single one of them has a bounce of type "syntax". Yet I've emailed successfully to those very people before. Also, I was able to get other mailings going this morning.

What could be causing these bounces? I'm puzzled.

4.4.6 includes a patch for this (or at least form some aspects of this): https://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-14799

for now, you should kill your civimail php cron job and let the mailing job start again

Thanks Lobo,

I've never tried to stop a running CRON before. Is this doable through the Civi interface or do I need to look elsewhere to make it work?

Thanks

Nic

Right. Level of frustration particularly high at the moment. CiviCRM is AWESOME, except when you run into a problem. *sigh*.

I went in shell, did ps aux and it listed a bunch of processes. I killed all processes one at a time that were associated with the user running the Civi crons.

Tried my mailing again. Same thing happened. I NEED to send these mails out urgently.

Assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Just to followup from IRC discussion: the mailing is relatively small (400 emails), so the cron is probably finishing quickly, so nothing to stop/kill.

If the bounces are from mail sent to Yahoo email addresses the it is probably because of Yahoo's strict DMARC policies and you are sending mails with a Yahoo return address. This may not be your case but we did run into this problem. The CiviSMTP were able to see the full bounce message and clue us in.

Not our situation, no. We aren't using yahoo at all (nor any service underlying Yahoo), and the bounces are from multiple domains, not just Yahoo.
