Importing Contacts with employed by relationships into a group
June 30, 2014, 10:24:06 pm
Hi there.
I often have a basic import procedure -
A bunch of contacts with name, email, phone, job title and employer,
For employer I set up the relationship
"employee of"
then "Organisation Name" (Match to Contact)
If I run this - great no problems, and the Org names are created as an org contact if they don't exist already, which makes sense.
however, sometimes to save time I would love to be able also to add these contacts to a Group on the import,
as is easily possible on the third import screen.
The problem is, that if i take the steps above, not only are the original contacts added to the group, but so are the Orgs they now have relationships too.
Is there a way to avoid this - normally I would just like the individual to be grouped and not the Org as well.
If not - is this an intentional outcome?

I realise the long solution is to simply import relationships and groups separately.

My work around would be to accept the group as CiviCRM wants to create it then use  Find Contacts or advanced search to isolate the Orgs in that group and remove them from it.

Thanks for the response Joanne

a reasonable work around and something I have been doing,
but alas sometimes I have the odd org that i either want in the group, or already was in the group
And so i have to check that is not the case beforehand, and make them the exception on the final advanced search.
