Hi,

When we perform an "Export contacts" to excel from a search result (contacts for instance), we get this message when Excel tries to open the file:

The file you are trying to open "example.xls" is in a different format than specified by the file extension. Verify that the file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source before opening the file. Do you want to open the file now?

I wonder in what format civiCRM is exporting, and if there´s a way to avoid this message (downloading in the correct format ideally)  ???

CiviCRM exports are CSV files.   As an open source project it doesn't make sense to export in a Microsoft format.  I have no trouble opening them in excel.

Then why the extension is xls instead csv?

I am on Windows 7 and when I export in Firefox, Chrome or IE the file has the extension .csv .   

I think you must have configured a setting somewhere in your browser so that .cvs files are saved automatically as .xls files when they are downloaded (or you are saving the file as .xls after the download without realising you are doing it).
