Some failed eWAY transactions are processed as Complete by Civi

I had the following report from a user of our Civi installation:

Quote
According to CiviCRM it looks as tho [contact name] has paid twice for membership

However on further inspection into e-way it shows the one at [transaction time] was failed (do not honour) yet civi still recorded a completed contribution. Also extended her end date

We are running Civi 4.4.6 on Drupal 7.  We don't have the infrastructure set up to properly test this, let alone see if it is a problem on the demo version.

Has anyone else had this issue?  Does anyone else have the capacity to try to reproduce it?
