Upgrading 4.4.5 -> 4.4.6 fails with "Your database has already been upgraded"

I followed what appear to be the only instructions on updating CiviCRM, here:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Upgrade+Drupal+Sites+to+4.5+-+Drupal+7

I put it like that because these instructions seem to be way overkill, talking about major upgrades and doing all kinds of hand-editing of files that doesn't appear to be necessary unless you're upgrading from ancient versions. I was surprised there wasn't a guide for minor point release updates (at least that I could find).

Anyway, I followed the instructions even though they seemed like a little excessive. I got to the step where I removed all of the existing Civi files in sites/all/modules/civicrm and replaced them with the newer version. Then I went to:

http://<your_drupal_home>/civicrm/upgrade?reset=1

And I got this message:

Sorry but we are not able to provide this at the moment.
Your database has already been upgraded to CiviCRM 4.4.5

Uh...well yeah, because I already have 4.4.5 and I'm trying to upgrade to 4.4.6!

Returning to the Civi admin pages show continued notices that the 4.4.6 version is available, so clearly it isn't seeing the new files and it hasn't updated the database. And yes, I cleared all my caches.

So I'm not sure what to do. This isn't one of the problems listed in the troubleshooting list in the wiki.

I don't know what the answer to your problem is, but for a 'quick update' guide look at http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,32532.msg138947.html#msg138947  I could add this to the documentation, if people (i'm not sure who that might be) approve.  it's the sort of thing you can work out for yourself, but it would be useful to have written down.

Hello IvanB - did you ever get this resolved?

I'm getting exactly the same problem with a WordPress CiviCRM install.

Current Civi install is 4.4.5.

Renamed old Civicrm directory to CivicrmBAK

Copied downloaded version 4.5.6 to Wordpress plugins directory.

I run the script

http://<your_wordpress_home>wp-admin/admin.php?page=CiviCRM&q=civicrm/upgrade&reset=1

per instruction #4 at
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Upgrade+WordPress+Sites+to+4.5

and get the message:

Sorry but we are not able to provide this at the moment.
Your database has already been upgraded to CiviCRM 4.4.5

Have done upgrades before and haven't had this problem...

  • Used Terminal/Unix instead of a GUI/Mac FTP client
  • Deleted contents of /wp-content/plugins/files/civicrm/templates_c/
  • Deleted the civicrmBAK directory
  • Deleted the civicrm directory
  • Reuploaded the civicrm-4.5.6-wordpress.zip to /wp-content/plugins/
  • Unzipped it
  • Reuploaded backed-up civicrm.settings.php file to /wp-content/plugins/civicrm/
  • Cleared browser cache then ran script: http://<your_wordpress_home>/wp-admin/admin.php?page=CiviCRM&q=civicrm/upgrade&reset=1
  • Success!
