Dashboard doesn't save

A couple of my users are experiencing a problem with the dashboard when they signon - they have to wait a long while until 'CiviCRM News' appears - they configure the dashboard and drag this item to the top so they don't see it... but next time they login this is forgotten and this item is displayed again (after a long wait).  it seems the dasboard configuration isn't being saved between sessions.  I'm 'Admin' for the site and it works OK for me.  Ideas?

Some clues - I found this backtrace, which I guess is where the problem is...can a techy please take a look at this?  Thanks.

Bump... still getting this every time my client's user logs in - they are not impressed !  I've looked at the code but haven't got a clue.  Can someone please help? 

Clues - I can make this go wrong every time - my signon has 'CiviCRM News' as something that should appear - but it hangs until you click 'configure your dashboard.  Once this item has been removed, it 'seems' to be OK except that next time I sign in the whole scenario is repeated - that is the dashboard config didn't save anything.
