Setting up a newsletter registration form in Block with reCaptcha
August 11, 2014, 11:44:48 am
Setting up a newsletter registration form to be included in a block in Drupal is a bit tricky. For older versions of CiviCRM, the process is described here, and for newer versions here.

Following the latter guidelines, I have managed to set up such a form which - on a stand alone page works well.

Problem though: As I use the HTML Form Snippet, the reCaptcha doesn't work.

Does anyone know a workaround for this?

As I understand, I could use the Mailchimp plugin for Drupal and then sync from Mailchimp back to CiviCRM with  Mailchimp Sync. But that sounds a bit tedious.

I think the most commonly-used approach to putting any civicrm form in a drupal block is to use webform integration. The newsletter sign-up block on civicrm.org is a webform :)
PS There are better spam-control modules out there than reCaptcha. Try honeypot or mollom.

Thanks for the quick answer. Will try out Webform. As I think that quite a lot of people are looking for this, might it be good to add a note to the official documentation?

Regarding alternatives to reCaptcha: My experience with Mollom is not that satisfactory. Haven't tried out Honeypot yet, but made excellent experience with Riddler. But as I understand, none of these actually integrates with CiviCRM as Recaptcha does, right?

That's the beauty of webform-integration :). It opens up for use any module that works with webforms.

I've updated the upcoming version of the book to mention that option.
