Several mails are bouncing when we think they shouldn't
May 14, 2008, 01:26:10 pm
I was looking at the bounces in a recent mailing and saw several with the bounce reason given as "Badly formatted address". The addresses look good but there does seem to be a pattern. For privacy reasons I cannot list them here but will provide to Shane if requested.

They are all of the format firstname.lastname@domainname.xx where the xx may be ca, jp, mil, ml

There was also one that was firtstname-lastname@domainname.com.xx

I also had one that was name@gaijinknights.com which looks perfectly normal.

I think "Badly formed address" status is coming from the recipients server? Can you confirm?

I do not see anything on our end that would cause this. it could be a problem on the email provider end.

It's just that the pattern in the first couple of examples was the same but different email providers were involved. We'll investigate some more.

Shane,

I forwarded an email recently with some more examples of this that follow the same pattern in the address, that is firstname.lastname@somedomain.???

Emails sent directly to these addresses have no problem. Emails sent via UAS seem to bounce for an unknown reason. I think we need to investigate this some more and isolate where the problem is.

Thanks,

Dennis

Shane has replied to me directly with the following:

hi,  none of this stuff is related to civismtp as far as I can tell.  nor are any of the past problems.  civismtp is a simple smtp server.  no more, no less

sorry I cannot help more,

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem either with CiviSMTP or CiviMail? Maybe it is not a CiviCRM problem so I will start the topic in the general CiviMail forum.
