CiviCRM Change not available when group changed.
August 14, 2014, 11:23:28 am
Hi -

Whenever we make a change in a contact in CiviCRM... It works fine and shows correct information in Changelog that a particular user was updated by a particular admin and it contains the name of the admin (who made changes to the user).

But whenever a user is added/removed to a group... That information is displayed under the group tab itself... But it only says (Removed by Admin) or (Added by Admin)... Can't we have information exactly like who removed/added the along rather than it just saying admin.

The schema does not currently support that, although it would be a good change. A patch for this feature would be most welcome.

Hi there,

It sounds like you're running basic logging and not advanced logging (aka "binary logging").  If you turn on binary logging, you'll get this information in the change log itself - that and much more!  However, binary logging requires you either a) have a recent version of MySQL (>= 5.1.6), or you have the SUPER permission in MySQL, which a shared host won't give you (but if you run it on your own server/VPS you can grant it to yourself).

To be clear about the current state of things - the "Added By" for groups isn't intended to work as a change log - it only has four options.  "Admin" (for someone manually added), "Email, "Web", and "API" - for various ways of saying that a user (or another program) added a user to a group.  For a real change log on the group, you want binary logging.

Your database admin can set this up for you (assuming you're not the admin!).  Have her check out this page:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/CiviCRM+MySQL+Permission+Requirements

Once that's done, head to Administer -> System Settings -> Misc and change "Logging" to "Yes".
