Different prices for membership sign-up and renewal

I've got a situation where the client wants a higher membership sign-up fee in comparison to the renewal fee.

I'm assuming I can deal with this using the CiviDiscount extension, creating a suitable discount code that is auto-applied to members when buying the relevant membership.

Anyone else used this method successfully, or is there a better way?
