Dynamic Text Fields in E-mail Template?
August 20, 2014, 09:56:44 am
Hello - I am new to this community and to CiviCRM.  I am not a developer or a coder, but here I am :)   I apologize in advance if this topic has been covered already, I searched but I may not have been using the right keywords.

I am creating HTML templates for messages to be sent out by the system.  I would like to include fields in the E-mail template that will reference the date and title of the event dynamically, so say the event date changes, the adjusted date will automatically appear in the e-mail template. I essentially want to dynamically link the Event Title and Event Date/Timing information with the e-mail template.

I have been calling this a 'dynamic' text field, or macro, but admittedly I'm not sure what the appropriate terminology is.  I have been reading up on tokens but this is a little over my head and I am still unsure if that will help me achieve my goal.

Can you please let me know if what I am asking is possible in CiviCRM, and how to accomplish this- or point me to resources where I can follow steps to accomplish this myself?   I do apologize if this is a topic that has been covered extensively - I plead ignorance to terminology related to this type of thing.  As a member of other forums I know how annoying it is to repeatedly see threads come up on topics that have already been covered.

*I reached out to folks in IT to determine which CiviCRM version we have etc., I didn't know at the time of creating my account. I will update my profile as soon as I hear back.

Thank you.

Hi - welcome - I doubt I have the full answer for you. But yes tokens is likely to be what you need.

I can't say whether the tokens you need are currently available.

But if you are needing to send out emails to participants about an Event then a Scheduled Reminder is more likely what you need than just a Civi Mail

admin/scheduleReminders?reset=1

if you select it to be based on Event Name/Type then you should have access to a token for start date {event.start_date}

Is that nudging you in the right direction?

Thank you for the reply - I am going to work on this later this week and will see what I come up with related to tokens and what I am trying to accomplish.

Thanks -
