beta8 CiviCase Open Case confusion
August 29, 2014, 08:55:32 am
If it only makes sense to have 1 instance of an Open Case Activity type within any case, and that one instance is set by default within the standard timeline, then I should not be able to add any more instances of the Open Case activity type, either to the Standard Timeline, or in any additional Timelines or Sequences.

Re: beta8 (now beta9) CiviCase Open Case confusion

This got no response when noted re: beta8, and is still the case in beta9, so I'm bumping it.

If the new UI (which is great btw) is all about making life easier for users, it's a real shame that it risks being released with some significant and IMO relatively easily fixable tweaks that if left will make life more and not less confusing for users.

You might want to add as a bug if it is not in the issue tracker already. Still not a guarantee it will get fixed (resource allocation, etc.) but more likely than here.

it would be even better if you can raise the funds to get more resources and developers on it to improve things

If you feel the tweaks are relatively easy, please do take a crack at them and submit a PR with the issue

I'm not clear on the status of this stuff. The comment from Dave on the issue tracker implied that some tweaks were achievable within the time and funding budget available for the work, but that others might have to wait for a subsequent release. Tim, who as far as I'm aware, has led on this work, has made some changes as a response to previous comments.

But it looks like further work has been halted - presumably until some additional resource becomes available.

Which, as noted in my initial comment, seems to me to be a real shame, given that presumably the whole rationale behind creating the new UI was to make CiviCase more accessible to more not-tech users.

I don't think it classes as a bug, rather it is an implementation oversight that, in my view at least, significantly detracts from what is otherwise really good, and may well result in users defining case types that then don't work as expected, or possibly don't work at all. Personally I can't see the logic in investing in the creation of the new UI if the product of that work is then going to be released in what I can only describe as an unfinished state, but I guess maybe that's just me. Can I reconcile this with the recently published vision statement: "We create high quality, reliable, easy to use software"? I'm not sure.

Donald, I'm sure it would be better if I were to raise more money to get more resources, but that simply isn't realistic. I already give - and will continue to give - a lot of time to the project. I don't have the capacity to go out fundraising in addition to what I'm already doing. And as to the ease or otherwise of the tweaks I'm afraid I have no idea. That's not what I do.

You probably hit the nail on the head in the above but I think you are probably overstating the case when you say it 'significantly detracts' and say it is in  'an unfinished state'. It is certainly not more confusing since you could do this in the XML as well.

Yes we need to release high quality software, but we will never release perfect software, and we need to remember that 'perfect is the enemy of good'.

OK, the tweak you are suggesting might be easy (I am not sure) but lots of easy tweaks = a lot of work and at some point, you run out of resources to do even the easy tweaks.

I think it is realistic because there are lots of orgs out there that do raise significant resources to fix things. I'm not devaluing the work you do already - just saying that there are ways to get more resources towards fixing stuff.
