Updating membership contributions triggers membership status update
September 04, 2014, 10:09:19 pm
The organisation i am with has found that when we set a membership contribution to be cancelled, the membership is also set to cancelled, we were thinking that it should actually be if there is more than 1 membership payment, revert to the previous end date and previous status.

E.g. payment that extends membership from 30.06.2014 -> 30.06.2015 gets canceled, end date should get set back to 30.06.2014 with the correct status based on the corrected end date. this is because the membership isn't necessarily cancelled it is just that the payment to extend the membership is cancelled.

Just wondering what others thoughts are on this.

However if its is a brand new membership with this being the first membership contribution then yes we agree that the membership status should be cancelled

So it would become expired? Interesting thought and I can see how that would make sense for you.

My hunch is that we'll have people on both sides of the fence.  Depending on the split 90:10, 50:50 would make sense to change the behaviour or potentially make configurable with a default (though having too many configuration options gets complicated).

I'm wondering if you would be able to fund / work on this improvement? I ask because I would class it as a new feature and hence would probably need some effort to get it implemented.

Re status it may not be "expired" pe se as I am with a political party with a number of state branches, each with their own rules about membership, and a number of them have it membership ends 1 year after the person joined then they are "grace" for x amount of time then unfinancial then expired. So what we were thinking was that they would go to if in the right period grace or unfinancial.

Yeh, I certainly see your point, I would have to talk to others and see how much we can contribute to such but certainly i think we may look at getting some of our contractors to do work on this,

I think it would be good to have a discussion about this as I am certainly not sure what is the best way forward, however your idea of having it UI configurable does make some sense and is actually quite a nice flexible idea.

Here is a fine place to have the discussion - might want to publicise a bit more (twitter / blog) to see if this is important / interesting to others. If no one replies probably means they didn't see it rather than they are not interested and you'd be welcome to start with the implementation (you can write initial specs / ideas on the wiki in public, etc.) and if you or your contractors have specific questions / ideas to discuss, I am sure people will be available to talk them through.

Hi Seamus
I'd say your logic is sound. Cancelling a payment is not the same as cancelling a membership, and the first should not automatically trigger the second.

I would agree totally with your analysis in the case of the renewing member, i.e. that the status should simply revert to what it was prior to the payment being initiated.

In the case of a new membership, I would suggest that rather than being cancelled, the membership should change to a pending status.

I agree with Michael that too many config options can get confusing, but at the same provide flexibility. With sensible defaults in place I would argue that the vast majority of users would not need to go near the configuration options, but for those that want an alternative behaviour they could be really valuable.

In most our customers (NGOs receiving donations or member fees), canceling a membership contributions doesn't mean that the membership has to be canceled.
I agree that there are too many scenarios that could be very hard to manage by CiviCRM, but at least I think should be an option to define that canceling a membership contribution doesn't affect the membership status by default
Then you can add your own custom logic in an extension with hooks.
