creating civi mail templates

is there a repository of mail templates that I can look at?  I'm not able to create templates that are sophisticated enough to replace MailChimp.

not that i know of. if you aren't familiar enough with html and if the wysiwyg can't help get what you want, then someone may be able to suggest an online tool that could help you

The upcoming 4.5 (which will be released this month) comes with some great new responsive design templates for CiviMail.
Try asking your question on the new CiviCRM help site.
