I am inserting the user-dashboard into a page in wordpress, however it isn't actually showing any data of the user in question. Am I missing a step?

My first thought is, is your Wordpress user account correctly linked to the contact record?  When looking at the summary tab in the right hand pane where it lists the contact id it should be followed by a slash and then another id number that is a link, that is the Wordpress user id.  If you do see that, it is the same user account that you are signing in with?

The user is logged in, the account is correctly linked to a CiviCRM profile, and the profile is populated with some data...

I haven't had a chance to test this theory yet (I don't have a demo Wordpress install to play with at the moment), but is the group's access set to Public?  If it is, have you done any customizations to your civi install?

I haven't had this problem occur on other sites that use the Dashboard so I'm trying to see if there is something specific to your site without actually seeing your site.
