I wrote a small script for Drush that can sync and merge any number of groups. It also handles Smart groups (as a source obviously).

AFAIK it's (at this point) not yet possible to use Smart groups for ACL. This alleviates that problem although it's a bit clunky (it requires an extra group). I schedule it as a Cron job every hour (after it updates the Smart groups).

It's pretty ugly at this point but it works. Here is the code: github.com/guruevi/CiviGroupSync
