Your extension resource url is not configured correctly. CiviVolunteer cannot work without this setting.Correct the problem at Settings - Resource URLs.
Same problem as this thread I think http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,33660.0.html
Anyone willing to suggest a proper directory
Joomla 3.3.4 Civi 4.5 civivolunteer  Host 1and1
Here is a log file result when the config info and settings tab on the manage event screen.

When does this message appear for you? Immediately upon installing? At some other juncture?

Strange, the message in the error log suggests a permissions issue. What user are you logged in as when the error occurs? Is it your admin user?

Did you follow the steps in the referenced thread? Can you post the paths I requested from the other user?

Thanks for your reply
The message appears when I click the config menu item on the event listings for an event on the manage events screen or on a new event as soon as I save enable volunteers checkbox.
I am logged in as superuser
resource url --http://www.cms.friendsofpeakcreek.org/media/civicrm/custom/
extension url --http://www.cms.friendsofpeakcreek.org/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/

extensions dir -- /homepages/30/XXXXXXXXXXX/htdocs/clickandbuilds/Joomla/MyCMS/media/civicrm/custom/

It doesn't look like your extension url and extensions dir are pointing to the same place.  The extension URL is pointing to the administrator directory where Civi is installed (administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/) while your extensions dir is pointing to the custom directory in the media folder (/media/civicrm/custom/).  Both of these need to point to the same place, probably http://www.cms.friendsofpeakcreek.org/media/civicrm/custom (you shouldn't install extensions in the same directory as the core code).

Thanks for your input. I corrected the dir mismatch
EXT DIR/homepages/30/xxxxxx/htdocs/clickandbuilds/Joomla/MyCMS/media/civicrm/custom/
EXT Resource=http://www.cms.friendsofpeakcreek.org/media/civicrm/custom/
CiviResource=http://www.cms.friendsofpeakcreek.org/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/

I think maybe it is a permission error. Am wondering about .htaccess
What would be a good basic joomla/civicrm general file. I know little about that subject?
Any thoughts appreciated.
