Import Trouble with Multi-Part Fields
May 21, 2008, 10:41:24 am

First off, I'm finding the use of CiviCRM to be quite frustrating and non-intuitive.  The documentation so far hasn't helped me with a single problem I've come across.  Hopefully the forum can do a better job.

I am having lots of problems importing data.  One problem I'll ask here involves IM Screen Names.  There are two parts to this field.  First you need the service type (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, etc) and second you need the actual screen name (coolgurl353, etc).  I have that info currently saved in a CSV file in two fields (one for service type and one for screen name) but I don't see how to import that into the structure CiviCRM has set up for IM names.  I only see an option for the screen name.

This seems to be a problem with all "multi-part fields", i.e. fields with check boxes or pull down menus, etc.  My current data saves this information in multiple fields and CiviCRM wants to put them into one.  Honestly I like the way CiviCRM would format them, but there doesn't seem to be any way to import this information.  I have other fields with check boxes and the like.

How can this be done?

In regards to your first comment about your frustration, I am sorry to hear this. What documentation are you referring to? Have you checked out http://wiki.civicrm.org? If you learn better by seeing, have you checked out the screencasts here: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Screencasts

I am actually going to make some more screencasts and docs for CiviCRM, so if there is something in particular that you wish there was better documentation and/or visual example, let me know and I will make it for you and the rest of the world. Give as much detail as you want; the hope is to get the documentation out there, not just complain about it, so I would appreciate your input.

Your particular question suggests to me that a "service provider" field needs to be added to import functionality. I also checked and don't see this option. This might be a bug/oversight, or there may be a reason. In any case, I've reported it as a task to the CiviCRM bug tracker, and you can follow the progress here: http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-3140

Hope that helps.
