Is anyone still running CiviCRM in Windows and IIS?
October 01, 2014, 08:35:04 am
Not sure if this should go under "pre-installation questions."
I am evaluating CiviCRM for a small non-profit but everything we use runs under Windows and SQL Server.
Considering the installation instructions for the "latest" version still says "As of 24 May 2010, this guide is 'In Progress'."
and that the latest post in the "Windows and IIS installations" forum was in 2013,
is anyone still using Windows IIS or did everyone abandon that and switch to Linux?

How much maintenance and tweaking can I expect to have to do, (and how much help can I expect from the forums?)

I was not planning to use SQL Server for CiviCRM. (I was just pointing out that my experience is with the Microsoft platform, so would like to use Windows if possible)

I was thinking of PHP, Drupal and MySQL as they seem to be available for Windows.

Also, does anyone have experience with WampServer?

Tim, I just did some work to fix some bugs in Civi for the upcoming 4.5.1 in regards to Windows servers.  I tested it using WAMP and others tested IIS and XAMP.  So it does work and if you find there are further quirks you should let us know so I can look into fixing them.  But it should run fine on PHP/MySQL under Windows.

Hey there,

At least a few (though not many) people do CiviCRM development under windows - I've seen them at sprints so you could give it a go.

Choice is between
* learning a new platform (ubuntu virtual machine on virtualbox on windows?)
* dealing with differences between MS and Linux and limitation of MS development.

Not sure which is less work though I think i would prefer the learning option myself (just personal opinion).

I'm running development for four sites and production for three sites all on IIS.

Really the only challenge is setting it up correctly and finding documentation geared toward Windows, after that it is pretty straightforward.

The classic rub of running this stuff on Windows is speed, but that has not been my experience at all.

In fact, the sites I oversee that run on Linux are a bit slower overall.  Not by much, but they are.

My IIS servers have also been rock solid.

And did someone port the mysql to sql server? if so, I'd love a copy of that.

CiviCRM contains a lot of MySQLisms; you'd have a very hard time porting it to SQL Server I think.
