Find Contacts dropdown issue

When we do a contact search from the Find Contacts box in the left side of the CiviCRM menu bar, a few results in the dropdown results are oddly split into two items. This only happens with a few contacts. Most are as you would expect.

The first item has the name and part of the address. The second item has the rest of the address (of the same contact).

Clicking the first item of one of these odd contacts results in an error - the resultant URL does not have the cid. But clicking the second item loads the contact record as expected.

Why is this happening, and how do I fix it?

What version of CiviCRM? Chances are you can fix it by upgrading.

from memory when we hit this in the past it was because there were paragraph/line breaks in the fields in the DB - never clear to me how they got in there, but editing the name via the UI tended to fix this I think

if that is not the case, let me know and i will help you search back for previous tickets where i might have explained it better

Your version of CiviCRM has security updates available. I recommend you upgrade to at least the latest 4.4 asap.
