Hi ... I'm using Joomla 2.5.18 and trying to upload Civicrm and getting the following error:

Warning: require_once(/home1/retinal/public_html/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm.settings.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /tmp/install_5431a2f228a8b/com_civicrm/admin/configure.php on line 115

Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/home1/retinal/public_html/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm.settings.php' (include_path='.:/opt/php53/lib/php') in /tmp/install_5431a2f228a8b/com_civicrm/admin/configure.php on line 115

I have also tried to install from directory and getting an message about incorrect "path"

Any help would be appreciated.

Did you follow this guide:

Did you upload the code for CiviCRM manually to your server?

That is a Joomla installer error, not specifically a Civi error. 

1) Based on your post I'm guessing your first attempt was to install through the Extension Manager, which CiviCRM package (there are two available for download) are you using? 
2) And for the second attempt for install from directory which package did you use, the same as the first? 
3) Have you checked the directory permissions on your server? 
4) And is this a brand new install or an update?
