On other open source projects for bigger features that are too expensive for one client, I've seen some open funding system, so we can all pay a small % of the total cost of a feature several wants and cover the cost of the development.

I like the sound of that.  Lobo, would it be possible to set up a page where we could chip in funds toward a bounty for specific features we need?  For example, if an item can be developed at a cost of $2,000US, perhaps there would be 20 folks each willing to kick in $100 to make it happen.  That might make it easier to get community contributed code.

Dan / Xavier:

Do u'll want to play a lead role and drive this experiment forward. A couple of things:

1. Pick 2-4 issues which you think has got enough community support.

2. I've created a new specific board for this: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/board,32.0.html

3. Get agreement on the specification, what needs to be done etc. If you think there is enough traction, email me for a quote on the price. Our consulting rates and agreement is here:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Consulting+Services+Agreement

4. If it seems that the community can raise the $$$ for this, create a wiki page and display a chipin widget to raise the needed funds.

5. If the amount is raised, we'll add it to the feature set for the next release.

6. Note that 2.1 is feature frozen at this stage. However to get this experiment off the ground and running, we'll be happy to squeeze in a 1-2 small features (< 50 hours work in total)

I think I am coming down w/ some unpleasant virus so I may not be back for a couple of days.

Meanwhile, here is my ?  -- how does this relate to the UserVoice suggested projects.  Is it reasonable to start there, with things that are not on the current roadmap?

You can potentially use the UserVoice suggested projects. I just edited the list to move all things being done in 2.1 to a completed state (voting on those issues dont make a lot of sense, since they are already being implemented and clutters up the list)

I've made you an admin on that site, so you can cleanup the list if/when needed :) I dont think some of the bigger projects are there, so you might want to add a few of them
