Setting up new Contact Type for Positions/Offices
May 22, 2008, 04:52:29 am
Thanks for pushing for this Mr TwoWheeler. Had wanted to float the idea but wasn't sure what model would work.

Does this seem like a goer for this sort of approach! Read the page on the wiki here http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/New+contact+type+for+Position+or+Office

If it can be done reasonably cheaply I think it neatly sidesteps lots of data management issues that I am sure must trip up other non-profits.

Thanks for the suggestion and for writing it up.  I am starting out this process thinking that we should filter the ideas through the user voice voting system.  This will ensure that there is enough support for an idea to actually produce enough contributions to pay for it.  I am concerned that if we set up a chipin for a proposal with only a few supporters, their contributions will sit in the account unused because they are not large enough to pay for the work.  Then people will be angry,  frustrated, disappointed or some combination thereof.  In other words I don't want to take anyone's money unless it is pretty clear that we can deliver what they want to pay for.  If there is only one person interested in an enhancement, s/he is always free to go directly to Lobo to get a quote.

So, the process will be as follows --
1. Post idea on user voice page
2. Write up a proposal
3. Email to Lobo for a quote
4. If it looks like we can do it, post a chipin widget to collect the money
5. Deliver!

If you guys think there is a better way to go about this, please tell me.  I am quite willing to take your ideas.

Thanks.

Hope you are feeling better. Guess I am not familiar enough with the chipin idea, i presumed it was about 'commitments' ie 'if this project is undertaken in next xx weeks then I can commit xx dollars? Though I can understand why those commitments need to be 'real dollars in an account' once the project is locked in.

In terms of what I am raising I feel I need some more input/feedback before floating it as I am hoping there is a more logical way of giving people multiple-personas and being able to link custom-data and mailing lists to the persona rather than the contacts 'primary' email or address.

there are also services like http://www.fundable.com/ which basically return the money if the target has not been raised. i dont know how good or bad that service is, so do your research :)
