Multi-record Custom Fields

I have a custom field set which is quite heavily populated. I would like to convert this to allow multiple records but the programme is blocking this.

I am suspecting this might be because I already have information in the current fields. Is there any way to to make this change without either losing the current information or having to start again?

Your profile indicates you are using 4.2. I believe in later versions of CiviCRM you can change from single to multi-record custom data via the UI.
Try asking your question on the new CiviCRM help site.
