I'm having a bit of an issue with the core 'send email to contacts' feature: it works fine for a small number of recipients, but when I try to send a thousand it comes back with an invalid response code. I'm guessing that this has got something to do with SMTP spam prevention, but I'm not sure. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can solve this problem? I'd use civimail but haven't got root access to the server (we're using Dreamhost).

Does it come back with this error no matter what the recipients are, but solely because of the amount of them?

Your guess about spam prevention might be right, but it’d be best to contact your hosting and ask them what the limits are; also, you can try editing the packages/Net/SMTP.php file and setting the $_debug variable to true (around line 72).

From our point of view, CiviMail is the natural tool for mass mailings (and we consider a mailing to a thousands recipients a mass mailing), though.
