Add membership from group? How to?

I'm transferring an existing organisation database of members.  They are all now in Contacts just fine divided into groups like Officers and Members.

What I'm looking for is a way to add membership to group--all with same parameters.

Anyone point me to a way to do this?  Thanks, Howard in Melbourne, australia

I would consider exporting the internal/contact id to a csv

adding columns for all the necessary 'membership' fields like
- type
- start date
- etc

then use the Import Memberships (under Memberships in menu) to add that info as a Membership record to your Contact record.

Am I making sense?
