Archives & Discuss List Capability?

Can CiviMail lists handle discussion lists?  Like Yahoo Groups where any member can post a message to the group?  If so, are there message archives and moderation tools?

If not, why not?  Are there plans to implement this feature?

currently no and the core team does not have plans to implement this in the short/medium term.

Building a discussion list system is a pretty big project in its own right, and there are a couple of good projects out there already (sympa, mailman). Time might be better spent integrating with an existing project than building it on CiviMail

You might be interested in this http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,3335.0.html. It allows you to sync mailman with current members.
