Is 6 hours to send 1700 emails normal?

Just wondering.  We scheduled a mailing with just 1760 recipients.  It started at 8:30 AM and took until 2:03 PM to finish.  Should it take this long?

It's not out of the question, a lot of that has to do with your server environment and settings.  I have worked with people that had to throttle Civi's mailer to only 100 emails per hour, so a run like that would have taken 17 hours.  Have you set the throttle in Civi?  Or do you have restrictions that have been put on you by your host or SMTP service for sending emails?

It's a matter of math--depends on how often your cron runs and how many emails go out per cron job. 300 per hour is not terrible. If you only need to send a few thousand emails, I think it's fine--it happens automatically so unless you're in a big rush, you can relax and let it do it's thing. :)

Thanks.  Now I have something to report to the BOD.  I didn't think it was too bad - but they did ask the question and I didn't have anything to compare it with.

We started doing testing and are getting 10,000 emails out in about 40 minutes, no parallel processing.  But I think we have a very fast SMTP server.  Perhaps you can cut your test case down to one or two emails, and run xhprof against the php script that sends the emails so you can find the bottleneck.  Or try all the different outbound email types (don't send, send to DB, SMTP, mail, etc) and see if that changes things.
