Upgrading CiviCRM 3.2.5 to 4.1.8 - Multiple problems - see steps taken
October 31, 2014, 12:35:11 pm
Hi
After following the upgrade procedure to upgrade from CiviCRM 3.2.5 to 4.1.8 Drupal 6.33 I received the following error:  (please note my php version is 5.4.x as my hosting provider is removing 5.2.17)
Re: Fatal DB error, exiting, seems like your schema does not have civicrm_setting

I searched the forum and found instructions as follows (from Klyntone, Hershel and Kurund replies):
I have found some instruction courtesy of Hershel to solve this:
1. Disable CiviCRM module
2. Remove old CiviCRM database (or tables)
3. Remove sites/default/civicrm.settings.php
4. Run the CiviCRM installer ( sites/all/modules/civicrm/install/index.php )
5. Remove new CiviCRM database (or tables)
6. Replace CiviCRM database (or tables) with your backup
7. Run the upgrader civicrm/upgrade?reset=1

This will get a clean fresh install and thus a good sites/default/civicrm.settings.php file and then you can run the upgrader using your old [tables.

I followed the steps and after running the CiviCRM installer I received many errors along with page not found and a new database was not created.   I would greatly appreciate any help or insight into what to do next.   The attached file have the errors.

UPDATE:  set PHP back to 5.2.17 and ran installer and didn't receive errors only Page Not Found

Hi Smily,

I see some instructions here for 4.4 current is 4.5.2,
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Upgrade+Drupal+Sites+to+4.4+-+Drupal+6

Number One should always be on any version  --> **  1) Back up your database (might as well bu code too) **

Your number one is inaccurate, you need the civicrm mod ON , disable other civi mods.

Also make sure you have the Drupal6 package, the default is D7 now.

Hi,

That was procedure that was posted in the forum to correct the issue with the upgrade and receiving the Re: Fatal DB error, exiting, seems like your schema does not have civicrm_setting.

Still need assistance please see entire 1st post.   Page Not Found.

Much appreciated.

Note to hth:   The upgrade procedures indicate to go from CiviCRM 3.x to 4.1 Drupal 6.x first and when I did I received the Fatal DB error above.   I found in the forum what I tried after that (Forum gurus Herschel and Kurund)

When you refer to information found on another forum post you should include a link to that post so that others can read the whole post giving them the background to the problem.

Hi Smiley,

I am sorry, I saw "turn off civicrm module" and "404"  Figured I didn't need more info sorry....
I would hate to give you poor advice, but I would try the upgrade again carefully reading the upgrade instructions,
NOT troubleshooting posts for other peoples problems. (fatal db error is pretty general)
Try using fresh un-upgraded db with working install using php 4.3. Another painful suggestion is to try increment upgrade,
Can you successfully upgrade to some higher 3x version. GL

When you ran the installer and got the Page Not Found error, did you get any errors in the Civicrm logs?  Unfortunately page not found doesn't tell us a lot, I'm hoping you might have gotten an error that might give a hint as to why you are ending up there.

My apologies to everyone for not posting links and more information (sorry reload, Joanne, Dan C).  I am most grateful for everyone's help.  After following the upgrade procedures here:  (started with this as the instructions to upgrade to 4.4 said that it would probably fail and to upgrade to 4.1 first):
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC41/Upgrade+Drupal+Sites+to+4.1+-+Drupal+6

Running the upgrade gave me this error:
Re: Fatal DB error, exiting, seems like your schema does not have civicrm_setting

I searched the forum for possible resolutions and found the following:
http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,31555.msg135292.html#msg135292

Followed Hershel's steps and when trying to run the install got the Page Not Found.      (My understanding was that the structure changed and the upgrade couldn't complete because the database didn't have the civicrm_setting table?)

I've attached the CiviCRM log file (I hope this is the correct one).

If there is a better way to resolve the civicrm_setting error and continue the upgrade I will restore the CiviCRM database and try the upgrade.

Appreciate very much all the help.
Jeannine

Have you tried instead of going from 3.2.5 to 4.1.8 going from 3.2.5 to 3.4.8 to 4.0 to 4.1?  I have encontered the no settings table issue before and sometimes the best way out of it is to make smaller incremental jumps.  I don't remember off the top of my head when it was added, I believe in 4.0, so at least making that a stepping stone might help.
