Dealing with individual contacts in marriage/divorce
November 06, 2014, 07:57:36 am
Hello, let me know if I should take this question someplace else. I am very newbie. We have a small community organization with about 1000 contacts and 300 donating members.

How do orgs usually handle it when two individual contacts get married? Don't want to be sending duplicate mailings to the same house (expensive for us, looks wasteful to them) but don't want to lose their individual histories.

Also, how do you handle it when a couple gets divorced? I have been splitting out into two contacts and making a best-judgment guess about where to keep the history.
thanks! angie

We use Households and Relationships.

Setup your system where the actual address is in the Household Record adn share the address to the individuals that are in the household. Do mailings to the households.

Use Relationships (spouse of) to indicate marriages. End the Relationship with an end date when a divorce happens and remove the person from the household and put them in a new household with the new address.
