Recipient count issue with 4.4.9
November 08, 2014, 12:53:13 am
Doing a first mailing with a new 4.4.9 site. I have a mailing list with 214 contacts, the vast majority of whom have an email address. Selecting the group for the mailing, CiviMail reports that the number of recipients is 2.
I sent the mailing, and the message has indeed been sent to just two addresses. Why is it choosing to ignore the other 200+ contacts in my group? How can I debug this?

Have you checked their mailing preferences? Do not mail and user opt out? Are they deceased?

Hi  Michael
Yeah - been through all the obvious checks. Reviewed all my settings, checked all the contact statuses, mailing preferences, etc. If I can send them email through CivicRM without using CiviMail, the only thing that should be stopping me form using CiviMail tor each them would be whether they've opted out (which no-one has as this is the first time we've tried to reach them via bulk mail). They are all newly imported records so I'm certain none has 'do not mail'. There a two or three 'deceased' contacts in the import. Stumped.

Just ran a test on the demo site at d44.demo.civicrm.org which looks to be running 4.4.10

I created a mailing list group with 5 contacts in it, chosen from the sample data. I checked that all five contacts had email addresses, and had no preferences set that would rule them out of inclusion in a CiviMail mailing.

I then created a mailing, and on the second screen where CiviMail reports how many people the mailing will go it, it reported "Total recipients: 3".

Just ran the same test (pretty much - although different contacts). 6 contacts added to a new mailing list group. Set up anew mailing, and CiviMail reported "Total recipients: 6".

Clearly not an exhaustive test, but perhaps indicative that 4.5.x is not suffering the same issue?

I have merged the fix for that into 4.4 branch - not sure how to kick a rebuild of demo but once that happens you can check if the issue Michael is the cause

Spent a little more time working with the site that initially showed the problem with CiviMail giving clearly incorrect counts.

What I found was that if I edited and saved a contact record without actually making any changes to the record, then that record got counted by CiviMail. Records that had not been edited and saved were not counted.

All the records in this database had been imported using the contact import interface. Not an issue I've come across before.

It doesn't sound like a 4.4.9 regression which is a relief

My guess is that a boolean field is NULL & it's checking for 0 or 1 - e.g do_not_mail or else on the email table
