Using Dashboards

What is a generic Dashboard exactly?

There are many references to "The Dashboard", which is presumably the initial administrative screen.

But there also seem to be Dashboards for Contacts, Cases, the System, and presumably others.

Is there a place to read about Dashboards generically? They appear to be useful for landing sites for various user roles. If I consider creating a new one is that a good idea? Where would I learn how?

Can you flesh out what you are thinking of making a dashboard for? No I am not aware of any documentation about them at a generic level .. they just 'are' ;-)
