Contact Merge Issue
November 14, 2014, 05:06:04 pm
I'm seeing an issue when merging two contacts.  When reviewing the duplicate entry, you have the option (click box) to copy to the entry you plan to keep.  Regardless of the checkbox selection, the data from the duplicate entry is copied before deleting.  You wind up with multiple home email addresses, phone numbers and postal addresses.

I've duplicated this on the demo server:

1)  Create new contact with same name as a known contact in the database, along with test email, phone, etc.
2)  Search and select the two contacts to merge
3)  Do not click any of the "copy" boxes
4)  Merge contact

You'll see that the data copies with the box "unchecked".

Let me know if I should create a bug report.

Running another test on the demo server, this time I received the following error.  On the duplicate contact that I created, I selected to copy merrie@test.com but not merrie2@test.com.  I also did not select the 555-555-1212 to copy but it transferred...

Hoping the error message will provide a clue.

This is the expected behaviour for email addresses and phone number - we allow people to have more than one each location type

It is NOT the expected for postal addresses.  Are you sure you are experiencing this for postal addresses? I couldn't see that in your example.

Please see the attached sequence reproduced on the demo server:

1)  Original contact on the demo server
2)  Create duplicate contact with phone, email and postal details
3)  Select to merge, omitting (no check box) and selecting (check box) data to transfer to original contact
4)  Merge results

It looks like all data is transferred regardless of checking the box to transfer.

Thanks for the decent screenshots and explanation of the problem - nice work - can you submit a bug report, following these guidelines https://civicrm.org/bug-reporting and it should get fixed in an upcoming version.
