I sent two emails. One email to a known real address and one email to a known fake address.  However, CiviMail says that both emails were delivered.

I'm having the same problem! Hopefully someone will help us out. In the mean time, could you post your bounce processor settings?

bounce detection depends on quite a few factors including the response from the receiving mail server.

You also need to make sure that you have the bounce processing cron job enabled and bounces are being received in that mailbox

Is there a way to see what CiviCRM sees in the bounce detection mailbox? I set it up but I am not sure how I know its working.
