Professional help need for moving a Drupal/Civi-site
November 15, 2014, 09:20:04 am
Hello!

I work for a NGO who has a fresh Drupal 7 / Civi 4.5.2 running. We host it at http://www.civihosting.com/ and this is great.

Our problem is that we need to be able to make local working copies of the online-system. We tried a lot and we did not succeed. There exist manuals but it turned out to be really difficult. We always end up with some errors. See: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Moving+an+Existing+Installation+to+a+New+Server+or+Location

We need to be able to move this site by ourseleves to have a local clone to run tests beforhand. So, we are willing to pay somebody to help us showing how it works. We are good IT-people, we would just need a working checklist so we can update the local clone at any point of time.

The NGO really needs to be able to run tests on a local system before doing it on the live-system. Looking forward to your professional help!

Yours Ernesto!

I forgot to mention the system is mult-site and we would love to use Windows/XAMPP for local hosting.

Thanks a lot!

Can you tell us what errors? Then we can advise what method might work better for you.

Ernesto
This page on the wiki: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Override+CiviCRM+Settings
describes how to modify your civicrm.settings.php file so that values in the database that are location-specific to the server can be overridden. Using this approach you can have different versions of civicrm.settings.php on your server and your local clone and both should work.

Hi Ernesto,

We offer non-profit rates for DevOps services (Developer / Operations). This sounds perfect for what you need. The cost is £30 per hour (70% off our standard rates).

We can develop a set of work instructions for your team and support you setting up the local dev environments on a WAMP stack.

Message me via the forum if you would like to discuss further...

All the best,
Darren

Another option, and one that would work more easily, is to set up a dev server right on CiviHosting with a subdomain. Depending on the size of your install and your service level (disk space), you could possibly use the Control Panel restore function to create a new clone whenever you need it, and then walk through a very short checklist on pointing the files and db to the subdomain. Let me know if you want some help.
