"Unknown error" popup when uploading images or refreshing thumbnails [Solved]

After upgrading from CiviCRM 4.5.0 to 4.5.3, attempting to upload an image or refresh the image thumbnails produced the popup "Unknown error". Also, most thumbnails were not shown (I believe the only ones which are shown are the ones not larger than than the thumbnail size (default 100x100 pixels).

I found that Civi 4.5.3 introduced a new version of package kcfinder (3.12) which performs a test of the image file path to verify that it is a "real" path, i.e. not containing symbolic links, in packages/kcfinder/core/class/uploader.php function checkFilePath($file).

Changing the value of the images directory (Administer | System Settings | Directories | Images) from a path containing a symbolic link to the real path solved the problem.

The same happens to us. We upgrade from 4.4.4. to 4.5.5 and we are getting "Unknown error" from KCfinder. This is annoying. We change the path of the images directory to the real path and this solves de problem. The only thing that worries us is that this real path is not give for us hosting provider.
