inbound email to activity processing
November 17, 2014, 10:42:47 am
I had my email-to-activity processing all set up correctly and working when I was running 4.4, and then I went and upgraded to 4.5. I was hoping that the issue was just in the most recent update, but I'm now using 4.5.3 and it still isn't working. The error on the job log is as follows:

         Parameters parsed (and passed to API method):
         a:1:{s:7:"version";i:3;}

         Full message:
         Finished execution of Process Inbound Emails with result: Failure, Error message: Process Activities failed

In addition, the update from 4.5.2 to 4.5.3 seems to have broken my bounce processor. The error message on that job is:

         Parameters parsed (and passed to API method):
         a:1:{s:7:"version";i:3;}

         Full message:
         Finished execution of Fetch Bounces with result: Failure, Error message: A fatal error was triggered: Could not connect to MailStore for postmaster@mail.makomcommunity.org

         Error message:
         An error occured while sending or receiving mail. Could not read from the stream. It was probably terminated by the host.

Any assistance with either of these issues would be much appreciated. Anyone have hints for me?

Hey there,

In the past, I have encountered similar errors where an upgrade for x.x to x.x+1 has broken mail stuff because the mailing packages that have been upgraded, and that has broken things for some (though not all) mail providers.

I suspect that both error messages are wrappers around more useful error messages that are being recorded somewhere.  Do you have access to your PHP and/or apache error logs? Looking there at the times that these errors occurred and reporting back what you see will probably be most useful in working out how to fix this.

Well, after a bit of work I now have access to the php error logs, but there is nothing there. Curiouser and curiouser. So while I'm happy to know that nothing terrible is going on on the php level, it baffles me as to what the issue could be. Hrm. Any ideas?

Ok, I 'm a bit embarrassed to admit this, but the issue with the bounce processor seems to have been simply that the password civicrm had for that mail account was not up to date. So that's fixed!

However, I'm still getting the error on the processing of inbound emails. there seem to be no php issues that are generating any errors. The only error code I can find is what I've pasted above,

Parameters parsed (and passed to API method):
a:1:{s:7:"version";i:3;}
Full message:
Finished execution of Process Inbound Emails with result: Failure, Error message: Process Activities failed

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

This issue is resolved! I am a bit confused as to how it could have happened, but the update seems to have messed up my mail account settings. If anyone else experiences this issue, try resetting the mail account passwords. Once I'd done this, it worked like a charm. I'm certain the passwords had not changed, but somehow civicrm was not able to use the old passwords correctly.

Thank you Michael, for helping me figure out it wasn't a php issue!
