Upgrading from 4.3 to 4.5 but changing webhosts
November 18, 2014, 11:03:59 pm
I need some advice, I'm trying to help this non-profit to move from current webhosting using Drupal 7 and CiViCRM 4.3 to new webhost using Drupal 7.0 as well but want to use the latest 4.5 release.

I thought of perhaps of setting the new environment and running a mysql backup from original installation. But of course having two different releases I think this might not work due to possible changes on some tables.  ???

I'm new to CiViCRM and any suggestions that you might have would be appreciated here. Thanks in advance

regards, Jorge

You are correct, there have been schema changes between 4.3 and 4.5.

You should either upgrade CiviMCRM on your existing webhost and confirm the site is working correctly before moving it to the new webhost or move your existing Drupal and Civicrm 4.3 site to the new webhost and confirm it is working before upgrading from CiviCRM 4.3 to 4.5.  (probably the better idea, particularly if you are moving to a new webhost because you are dissatisfied with the existing one.)

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Moving+an+Existing+Installation+to+a+New+Server+or+Location  gives information on moving your site.

For upgrade instructions see http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Upgrade+Drupal+Sites+to+4.5+-+Drupal+7. You might need to upgrade in stages from 4.3 to 4.5.

Make sure you take a complete back up before upgrading.

Joanne,

Thanks so much for your suggestions, it makes a lot of sense of moving current releases to new webhosting and then upgrade all to 4.5. I really appreciate this.

regards, Jorge
