User wants to be alerted to new releases
November 19, 2014, 10:41:20 am
We've recently put out a pre-release beta version for 4.5 for an extension on github that is being tested by a few users. Someone asked if they could subscribe to be notified every time a stable release is published so that they can do the install/upgrade. I know that stables become visible if they visit the Extension management pages in CiviCRM, but is there some other way. For example, what about subscribing to a particular feed on github (I don't see how it is possible to automatically get that as we are talking not about a new branch, but the status of the branch as per the contents of info.xml) or civicrm.org (based on the extension views finding the new release). Suggestions?

Releases are tags, not branches, FWIW.
This documentation suggests that subscribing to a project would notify you of releases (but it looks like you'd also you'd get a bunch of other notifications of stuff you don't care about like issues).
Try asking your question on the new CiviCRM help site.

Agreed about tags vs branches. User only wanted to get notifications of stable releases, which is why I thought the civicrm.org infrastructure might be more appropriate since it understands the contents of info.xml.

I believe it's also possible to subscribe to open issues. So you might try keeping a perpetually open issue called "When's the next release?" with an explanation that people should subscribe to it, but NOT post to it (if you can keep people from posting automatically all the better  :o )

Obviously, then, you would post release announcements. You could also just title the issue "Release Announcements".
