Where are user-driven message templates saved?

We are redoing our user-driven message templates and would like to clear out all of the old templates.  First we would like to back up the old ones, but cannot find where they are - in the database or in a file.

Could someone please point me in the right direction?  I have researched this for over an hour and cannot find an answer.

Both the system defined message templates AND user-driven message templates are stored in civicrm_msg_template. Pretty sure the user-driven ones all have workflow_id = NULL. HTH
