Custom data for Groups?
May 27, 2008, 09:05:40 am
We were hoping to make files available to the members of a Group by adding a custom data group containing file fields to the Group.

However, creating custom data groups/fields for Groups seems to be kind of pointless, as the data seemingly isn't used in any way. The fields appear on the Group settings form, but cannot be used for searching, nor are they made available on display of contacts in the Group. Is there a point to adding them? Have I missed something?

(Using CiviCRM 1.9.13019.)

I'm not sure what the use case for custom data for groups is, i suspect it was added from one/more user requests.

However the recent ACL work with the NZ greens (http://civicrm.org/node/339) has given me a good use case of using custom data to store permissioning info both at the group and contact level

Your use case of using custom data at a group level to expose to contacts belonging to that group is a different useful way of looking at it. You can also do the below currently by using ACLs on custom data and giving permission to only contacts belonging to that group

The classic use case for custom data on groups would be, for example, meet ups.

The CiviCRM UK meetup group might have a record. One of the custom fields might be administrator, so you can track who is in charge of the group. Might also store a description, etc.

Drupal Organic Groups is a good model of when the group should be an entity independent of its membership list.
