NO BULK EMAILS (USER OPT OUT) vs Bulk Mailings Checkbox
November 22, 2014, 03:54:16 am
What is the difference between editing a contact record to set the "NO BULK EMAILS (USER OPT OUT)" checkbox
and individually unchecking "Bulk Mailings" on each of the contacts e-mail addresses?

By default bulk emails are sent to the primary email address.

If someone wants bulk emails sent to an address other than the primary one, then you need to specifically select it via the Bulk Mailing checkbox.

So having no Bulk Mailing checkbox selected just means that the default will operate, that is the bulk email will be sent to the primary email address.

This is obviously very different from setting the NO BULK EMAILS (USER OPT OUT) checkbox.

Thank you.

Is it correct to say that if Bulk Mailing is checked for each e-mail address on a contact with multiple e-mail addresses a copy of the bulk e-mail will be sent to each address?

If you have selected  Enable multiple bulk email address for a contact on /civicrm/admin/setting/preferences/mailing?reset=1 then you can flag more than one Bulk Email address for each contact and a bulk email will be sent to each email address so flagged.

If you haven't selected Enable multiple bulk email address for a contact,  then on each contact record you can only set one email address to receive bulk emails.

Hello friends!

Some troubles understanding the bulk email logic.

Example:

* All 10 contacts in the group have a Primary Email Address defined.

* Only 4 contacts have the checkbox 'Bulk Emails' near the Primary Email Address checked.

* If I use Mailings->New Mailing and I choose this group, the system says: Total Recipients: 4

* None of those contacts have the checkbox 'NO BULK EMAILS (USER OPT OUT)' checked.

-----------

I am happy that I found the reason. But I have no solution, because:

a)  In Total we have 22000 contacts and I cant set the checkbox 'Bulk Emails' for each one manually.

b) There seems no mass operation available to set this checkbox for all contacts / all Primary Email Adresses.

c) Both if the setting 'Enable multiple bulk email address for a contact' is true or false, the Primary Email is not taken, unless the checkbox 'bulk Emails' is checked for each contact.

-------------

Maybe you know something about that. Thank you so much!!

Hey friends!

I was trying to set the 'is_bulkmail' in the table 'email' manually to 1 for each primary address. That was easy. But it did not help.

Then I did more tests and found out, that all contacts that have been saved got the bulk-emails, and all that have never been saved manually did not. (The most contacts have been imported and never been saved manually.)

I looked at the DB what is the difference between saved and never-saved contacts, and found a few fields on NULL. I did run following SQL-script:

UPDATE `civicrm_contact` SET is_deceased=0,
preferred_communication_method='' WHERE is_deceased IS NULL;

And now it works.

It had nothing to do with the bulk-setting, it only seemed like. Maybe this information is useful for somebody.

It works now for us. Thank you a lot!!
