unable to reach server when viewing on mac
December 02, 2014, 10:21:57 am
When an admin uses a mac, and wants to view the details of a contact's activities, they receive the error message "Unable to reach the server. Please refresh your browser and try again." If I go into the browser console, I find "Failed to load resource: ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED." When I tried flushing the browser cache, I got the same civicrm error, but a different browser console error. This time it said "Failed to load resource: ERR_FAILED." Frustratingly, after not doing anything overnight, the error it now generates on the browser console is "ERR_CACHE_MISS," all the while showing the same "unable to reach server" on the civicrm side.

After a LOT of trying and failing to pinpoint the issue, I've discovered that this is a mac-specific problem. It happens in both Safari and Chrome, but not on a windows computer using internet explorer or chrome. It's not throwing any php errors on the server side.

One thing I do plan to do when I'm able to is to get the 4.5.4 upgrade, but we care currently on 4.5.3, and I don't see anything that specifically pertains to this in the documentation. Anyone have some ideas for me to try?

Which resource exactly is failing to load?

Civicrm loads, you can search for a contact, and you can view the summary of the contact's activities. That part all works. But when you click "view details" on a specific activity, the screen pops up but appears to be loading, and then you get the "unable to reach server" error.

Can you give the url it is trying to load and the server response?
I wonder if this is a same-origin problem. Do you by any chance have 2 or more valid urls at which you can access your site? e.g. http vs https or www.mysite.org vs mysite.org?

Here is an example link -- http://makomcommunity.org/civicrm/contact/view/activity?atype=12&action=view&reset=1&id=5085&cid=966&context=activity&searchContext=activity

What do you mean by server response? I don't currently have anything mroe detailed than the data above, but I'd happily look up more if that could be helpful.

Very interesting question. You can reach it with and without the "www." preface. I'm don't have the mac to test that theory right now by adding the preface. but I will definitely try that when I get it. If that is the issue, is there a way to correct the way the url is created, or to tell the computer to ignore the problem?

I think it's best to just nip this in the bud and set up your host to redirect from www to the same url without the www. This is pretty easy to do (just google it) or some hosting companies even have a checkbox for this in their control panel ui.

thanks for thinking of that! I've set it to redirect, so now that shouldn't become an issue. Unfortunately, the mac is still getting "unable to reach server" errors.

Any other ideas? I'm fresh out.

What happens when your mac user right-clicks on the link and opens it in a new tab? (or whatever mac people do instead of right-clicking)

Wow, that works! Thank you!

Why do you think it does that? Is there any way for me to make it work without needing to open in a new tab?

It would be helpful to collect a little more data.

- Does this happen with other popups in CiviCRM, or is it limited to "view activity?" Does it happen with every activity? Does it happen from other contexts like the activity dashboard or CiviCase?
- Does this happen in Firefox?
- Does this happen on other Macs, or just the one?
