No dropdown/no profiles in online registration config screen

Hi!  I am a new Civi user creating my first event.  I created a custom field set to use for Participants and a profile with those custom fields but there is no drop down or way to select it from the event online configuration screen - just an empty text box.  Screen snap is attached and help is greatly appreciated!  Using Civi 4.5 on Word Press 4.0.1...and trying not to pull my hair out.

I checked the online Civi demo to confirm that something was awry with this display.  I should definitely have a drop down from the select profile field.  Can anyone help?

If you have Jetpack installed, try deactivating the Notifications module.
