Organising members of organisations
May 28, 2008, 08:26:21 am
Hi,

I'm working at an regional organisation with member all over the region. All these members are also organisaions, having members an now I'm trying to use CiviCRM to manage all my known contacts and organise them. How can I make my contacts members of a local organisaions that is member of my regional organisation? Do I have to make a new membership for every local organisation? Or can I make 1 membership and just select this together with a local organisation?

There are several ways to do this - and you will need to play with things and think through what you need to DO with the membership info - before picking an approach.

A simple way to handle this is to create one membership type which is "owned by" the Regional organization  - call it "Regional Membership". Each local organization gets one of these memberships.

Then create a second "Local Membership" membership type. Also, create a custom field "used for" memberships - type = alphanumeric/select - which contains a list of your local organisations (assuming there's not hundreds of them). Make sure you select "searchable" for this custom field.

As contacts become Local members - you (or they) pick the local organization from this pick-list.

This approach is fairly simple - and I think will allow you to use advanced search or Find Members to locate contacts associated with any given local organization.

Hi,

Thank you for the reply!
As you say I'll have to experiment, but now I have a good starting point ;-)
