Civi not seeing profile fields

When I try to add certain profiles to the online registration config page Civi tells me the profile must have a field for email address and/or first & last names.  The profiles in question have all those things, and settings that appear to match other profiles that Civi WILL allow.  What am I not seeing? Thanks in advance!
