"I can't believe I'm the only one out there with this problem ..." - on the other hand it if was happening to lots of users there would be riots on the streets - so unfortunately yes it may be something odd about your implementation/set up/server

just coming back to an earlier point - IF the autocomplete is not working throughout your civi then might be worth changing topic title as it may catch other eyes eg

autocomplete in quick search, employer etc not working in joomla

Oh no - don't get me wrong, I just found it odd that no one has experienced this - absolutely sure something is jacked up on my end.  Just not quite savvy enough to figure it out :)
Ok, I'm going to come back to your autocomplete thought.  For sure that isn't working.  When I type in the letter "J" for instance in my quick search, based on the demo site, a list of people with the letter "J" in their email or name should be auto suggested.  Is this a correct assumption?
If so, that may be getting closer to my problem.  I can type in the letter "J" and hit search or enter and it will bring up all the applicable contacts in my contact screen.  But no auto suggest.  This is happening at every point where there is a "search" feature.
Let me see if changing my topic title gets more help.  Thank you Pete!

one other note ... I did download and enabled the quick contact autocomplete extension from civicrm v 1.5 but did not resolve the issue.

Can you upload a screenshot of  Administer > Customize data and screens > Search preferences ?

Can you check the contents of the sort_name field in the civicrm_contact table in your database?

Small possible update in my research:  after updating CiviCRM to 4.5.5, I had a window pop up repeatedly telling me "New Codebase version detected.  You might want to visit upgrade screen to upgrade the database".  When I click through to the "Upgrade Screen" I get an error which basically says this:
"CiviCRM 4.5.5 requires MySQL trigger privileges."
I use godaddy as my host and understand that this can cause certain problematic issues for some.  Haven't yet found out if I can add the privileges to make this happen in godaddy (research tells me it may not be possible but we'll see) ... possibility this could have something to do with the autocomplete issue or am I stabbing in the dark?

You need to find a new hosting company that will give you all the privileges that you need.

The civicrm listing of hosting provider partners can be found at https://civicrm.org/providers/hosting .

If you don't want to use someone on that list then you need to make sure the hosting provider you choose will grant you all the privileges you need.  Make sure you specifically check that you will be given  TRIGGER, CREATE ROUTINE  and ALTER ROUTINE.

Thanks Joanne.  I ended up doing that - using civihost.  Everything working just fine now.
